Roman Art: Summary, Key Works and 9 Solved Exercises

Roman art took Etruscan and Greek forms and added the arch, the vault and concrete. Periods, wall techniques and key works in tables.

Roman art comes down to three words: arch, vault, concrete. From them comes everything the Greeks could not build — baths, amphitheatres, domes forty metres across — while portraiture and historical relief add the other innovation: an art that records real people and real events instead of myths.

Three roots

From the Etruscans the Romans took the temple on a high podium with steps only at the front, the voussoir arch, and a taste for realistic portraits tied to ancestor worship.

From the Greeks they took the vocabulary of forms: the architectural orders and Greek statuary arrived in Rome in bulk after the conquests of the 2nd century BC, when Greece became a Roman province. Many lost Greek statues survive only through Roman copies.

What is original is everything else: the building technique, town planning on an imperial scale, the historical relief, and the idea of art in the service of the state.

The technical revolution: arch, vault, dome

The Greek system is post-and-lintel: two vertical supports and a horizontal beam. The beam is stone, and stone is weak in tension, so a long span cracks. Hence Greek temples crowded with columns.

The arch changes the rule. Wedge-shaped voussoirs push the load sideways onto the piers, so the structure works in compression, which is what stone and mortar do best. Extend an arch in depth and you get a barrel vault; cross two barrel vaults and you get a groin vault, which concentrates the load on four piers and frees the walls; rotate an arch about its axis and you get a dome.

The material that makes all this cheap is opus caementicium: lime mortar with volcanic pozzolana, mixed with stone rubble and poured into formwork. It sets under water, it does not need the skilled labour that cutting blocks requires, and it can be moulded into curves. The dome of the Pantheon is made lighter towards the top by using lighter and lighter aggregate, ending with pumice.

Baths follow a fixed route: frigidarium (cold), tepidarium (warm), calidarium (hot), heated by a hypocaust, hot air circulating under a floor raised on small brick piers. The best-preserved example in Britain, at Bath, shows the system almost intact.

The Pantheon is the clearest case of a geometric design: the internal height at the centre equals the diameter of the dome, 43.30 m, because the building is built around a perfectly inscribed sphere. If you are asked for the floor area, you only need the formula for the area of a circle.

Portraits: from verism to state image

In Republican portraits physical truth is the point: wrinkles, baldness, hollow cheeks. This is not a taste for ugliness but a reflection of the imagines maiorum, the wax ancestor masks kept in patrician houses, where a face served as the record of a man’s career.

With Augustus the register changes. The Augustus of Prima Porta borrows the weight-shift of Polykleitos’ Doryphoros, shows a permanently young ruler with the adlocutio gesture, a cuirass recalling the return of the standards by the Parthians (20 BC), the bare feet of a hero, and a Cupid on a dolphin alluding to descent from Venus. It is a political portrait, not a record of a face.

In the 2nd century AD the iris is incised and beards are drilled; in the 3rd century portraits become dramatic and abbreviated, ending in the rigid frontality of the late Empire.

The historical relief

This is Rome’s most original contribution to storytelling in art. The Ara Pacis lines up a procession of identifiable people; the Arch of Titus builds depth, with figures that seem to step out of the background; Trajan’s Column unrolls about 200 metres of spiral frieze in continuous narrative, where the same figure reappears in scene after scene.

The most common mistakes

  • “Roman art is a copy of Greek art.” False for architecture, historical relief and portraiture, which are Roman inventions. True only for part of the ideal statuary.
  • “The Romans invented the arch.” No: Etruscans and Mesopotamians used it already. The Romans made it systematic and combined it with concrete.
  • “A basilica is a church.” In ancient Rome it is a civic building. The church meaning starts in the 4th century AD.
  • “Theatre and amphitheatre are the same thing.” Semicircle versus ellipse, actors versus gladiators.
  • “The Pantheon is Agrippa’s, it says so on the front.” The present building is Hadrianic, as the brick stamps show.
  • “Opus caementicium is a kind of visible wall.” It is the internal core, never the facing.

What are the main characteristics of Roman art?

What is the difference between Greek and Roman art?

Greek art aims at ideal beauty and uses post-and-lintel construction, which limits how far you can span; Roman art aims at use and effect, and with the arch, the vault and concrete it builds baths, amphitheatres and enormous domes. The subject changes too: a Greek temple is for the god, a Roman building is for the citizens and for the state.

Why is the Colosseum called the Colosseum?

Its Roman name is the Flavian Amphitheatre, after the Flavian dynasty that built it between AD 72 and 80. The name Colosseum spread in the Middle Ages and almost certainly comes from the Colossus of Nero, a bronze statue over thirty metres tall that stood next to it.

Who built the Pantheon and when?

The Pantheon we see today was built under the emperor Hadrian, roughly AD 118-125. The inscription on the front names Marcus Agrippa because Hadrian restored the name of the man who built the first Pantheon in 27 BC, which had been destroyed. The Hadrianic date is confirmed by the stamps on the bricks.

What is opus caementicium?

It is Roman concrete: lime mortar mixed with volcanic pozzolana and stone rubble (caementa), poured into wooden forms or behind a facing. It is not a facing technique like opus reticulatum or opus latericium: it is the core of the wall. Pozzolana let it set even under water, and without it there would be no Colosseum and no dome on the Pantheon.
